Fracking in the north-east

Plans are in development by the company Five Quarter to engage in underground coal gasification (UCG) off the Northumberland coast. More information will be posted here in due course. A trial project for UCG recently collapsed in Queensland, Australia, after benzene leaked into drinking water. We have serious concerns about the public health consequences of experimenting with UCG in this region; and we have equally serious concerns for the impacts for climate change if the experiments should be successful.

There are currently no plans to frack in the Tyne and Wear region, but this could change rapidly.
